Top-scoring SuperSport Aussie in Cremona for Tom Edwards
The first-ever WorldSBK weekend at Cremona Circuit, Italy has just wrapped up and Tom Edwards has finished the weekend as top scoring World SuperSport Aussie, despite only taking points in Race One.
It was a mixed bag of weather across the weekend. The early hours of Friday morning saw a huge downpour, making for slippy track conditions. A whopping 7 riders went down in the early moments of the session, ultimately bringing out the red flag mid-session.
After the restart, more riders went down before Edwards took a tumble at turn 2. The D34G team sprung into action to get Edwards back out in the session with only minutes to spare but Edwards wasn’t able to capitalise on the opportunity and finished the session with a P20 grid position for the weekend races.
Despite having his work cut out for him, Edwards showed grit from the moment the lights went out and fought his way through the field to finish in 11th and 1st in the World SuperSport Challenge, earning himself a trip to the World SuperSport Challenge podium.
The same couldn’t be duplicated again on Sunday, despite his best efforts Edwards narrowly missed out on points, finishing P16.
Edwards now leads the World SuperSport Challenge 7-points clear of rival Simone Corsi with only 3 rounds remaining.
“I just couldn’t get a good feeling on the front in qualifying which led to a crash towards the end of the session. The team worked really quickly to get me out again for the last few minutes, but I wasn’t able to improve my time. Race one wasn’t easy race-pace-wise, but I still managed to stay consistent and earn some valuable points. Getting caught behind an incident on the first corner meant I lost a lot of ground on the first lap. Even though we had a better pace, and the bike felt better today, our qualifying position and said incident stopped us from getting points today. Luckily, we’re heading straight to Aragon to redeem ourselves. Our number one focus will be qualifying because we know we have the pace in a race.”
