Race Report: Emilia-Romagna Round

Edwards increases World SuperSport Challenge lead after Emilia-Romagna Round

It was a mixed weekend of results for the Aussie #71 at his team home round of Emilia-Romagna, but Edwards managed to finish the weekend further increasing his World SuperSport Challenge lead.

The weekend started strong with Edwards finishing up free practice in P11 but an ultra close Superpole session left Edwards with a P20 on the starting with only 0.36 seconds separating him and the top 8.

There was work to be done if Edwards wanted to take home points and at lights out he quickly climbed his way up the field, making up 7 places in just 3 corners.

Edwards was struggling for grip on his Pirelli tire, making it difficult to keep up with the front pack. Edwards struck from behind by another rider where he made a lucky escape to stay on the bike but unfortunately only further increasing the gap between him and the front pack.

The #71 managed to hold on for a P12 finish and 1st to cross the line of the European Challenge riders, taking home 4 World SuperSport points.

Race 2 was a different story, with a technical problem with Edwards D34G machine cutting the day short. Edwards managed to catapult from P20 up to P15 from the start line, but felt the power of the V2 wearing thin in the opening laps. He kept pushing, even managing his claim his fastest lap just one lap before the bike completely lost power causing Edwards to pull off the track at turn 3, ending his hope at points before a red flag ended the session just a few corners later.

TOM EDWARDS:

“I enjoyed the team home race weekend at Misano. The atmosphere is always amazing here.

"Happy to of extended my SuperSport Challenge lead making it an overall positive weekend. It was unfortunate to miss out on points again on Sunday, I pushed has hard I could. I was gutted when I felt the bike loosing power especially as I had good pace, but that’s racing."

"I’m glad we could pull some positives from the weekend. We’re so close to where we need to be and we know what we need to work ahead of Donington in July."

I’m looking forward to having some testing days in Cremona next week and getting stronger.”
