Round 1 Preview: Phillip Island

The wait is over. The 2026 Australian Superbike Championship kicks off this weekend, and Tom Edwards is preparing for his first race aboard the Kawasaki ZX with his new team BC Performance. The new duo are headed south to the iconic Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit to launch their SuperSport Next Gen Campaign, alongside the World Superbikes.

Locking in for a full-season campaign home in Australia, Edwards lines up for Round 1 with renewed focus and one clear goal — to start the championship strong from the very first race.

“This weekend is about setting the tone,” Edwards said.

“Our pre-season testing went really well, we’ve put in a lot of work behind the scenes and BC Performance have delivered a competitive package. Now it’s time to put it to action. This year, I’m here to win.”

The opening round will be crucial in a condensed 2026 season, with just five rounds scheduled before the championship transitions to a summer calendar for 2027.

With fewer opportunities to score points, consistency and strong starts will be key in what is expected to be one of the most competitive SuperSport categories to date.

Edwards will compete in the new Next Gen SuperSport series, which will lead the regular SuperSport category as the ‘future’ of the class, the bikes boast World SuperSport specs and higher engine power.

As the lights go out for the first time this year, all eyes will be on Edwards as he begins this new chapter with Kawasaki.
